{flike}

14th April 2017 was Dhivehi Language Day. To mark this day at GIS, the school Dhivehi department and parent representatives took initiative to create a traditional display in the school foyer. With the help of very energetic parents the foyer was created in way that one half represented a local island  which included a small kitchen hut, a play area and a beachside along with a traditional Dhoni.

The other half displayed two segments: traditional clothing and accessories and parts of a coconut palm. Since the four houses of GIS are named after some parts of the coconut palm, this segment was displayed according to these four names: Ethuma, Ihaa, Bonthi and Nirolhu. Each area of this segment displayed some of the products prepared using the different parts of the palm. The clothing and accessories segment showed a variety of dresses worn by men and women during the different eras.
The main purpose of this display was to enhance Dhivehi language and so all the items diaplayed were labelled so that the students can learn the vocabulary that are new to them as the the items were from the very past. The display in the foyer will be there until the end of the week as teachers teaching Dhivehi will be using the area to teach the vocabulary.

To begin the day, a special assembly was organised and conducted by the Dhivehi department.The Chief Guest for the function was Mr. Abdul Rasheed Hussain who has been awarded the honour of 'Nishaan Izzuddin Izzath ge Veriya' by the Maldivian Government. He is a famous poet who has written a lot of Dhivehi poems and also an honourable person who has contributed immensely to develop the Dhivehi Language. During the function, the president of Dhivehi Literary Association (Fila), Ifasha Shareef spoke regarding the importance of Dhivehi Language. Both the Chief Guest and Fila President spoke about the Dhivehi Poet Hussain Salaahuddin who was the chief person who had worked to create interest in the children and people of Maldives to use Dhivehi Language in different literary forms. On 14th April every year, the day is marked in remembrance of this great poet.
