THE LORAX

‘The Lorax’ is based on a novel of the same name by Dr.Seuss. The film was directed by Chris Renaud and produced by Illumination Productions. It was released on March 2nd, 2012. The film featured famous cast members such as Taylor Swift, Zac Efron and Betty White. ‘The Lorax’ was not the kind of movie I would watch willingly, but it is good for kids.

The movie is about a town called Thneedsville that has no trees and manufactures everything, including things necessary for life such as air. A boy named Ted wants to impress a girl called Audrey, he has a crush on and sets out on a mission to find a real living tree. He goes outside of town to see the reclusive Once-ler, who reveals a deep, dark truth about Thneedsville.

‘The Lorax’ had an overall family vibe and a bright feel. The movie is good for younger generation, but I personally didn’t like it. The movie teaches good morals, such as take care of the environment. However, the character development was poor. For example, Ted’s crush on Audrey was mentioned throughout the movie, but it was never revealed to Audrey nor given a definite ending. There was no action or thrill, and some of the songs were annoying. The dialogue was very blank and boring. The repetition of the part where Ted kept on visiting the Once-ler became bland very quickly. The main antagonist, O’Hare, faced no legal action or was given any punishment though he did lose the townspeople’s trust. This teaches that you can get away with things with little to no consequence.

The movie teaches kids to be eco-friendly and that caring for the environment is important. This movie could be shown for elementary and primary school kids to teach them about good environmental values.

As I mentioned before, the movie is good for young kids, but kids above 11 years old may find it rather uninteresting. I would recommend it to young kids who like musicals or love the environment. Fans of Dr.Seuss may want to check out this movie adaptation. The movie is rated ‘G’, but extremely conservative parents may not like their children to see the kiss scene during a dream sequence. I would rate the movie 6/10 for young kids.
