‘Hour of Code’ Week

{flike}

This week GIS Computer Department has initiated ‘The Hour of Code’ programme as a school event to promote love for computer science, and develop computational thinking in students of GIS. Learning to code and programming help to realize the fundamental skills for problem solving in students of all ages. It also teaches them how to think differently about any problem. All the students of grades four and above are participating in a one-hour of coding during the week and upon completing the task, they are awarded with a certificate which will be given at special assembly the following week.

The Hour of Code is an attempt to teach people the basics of computer programming in 60 minutes in a fun, simple way. It is part of a campaign that Code.org, https://code.org; a non-profit organisation, launched in the US with the goal of introducing coding into the US curriculum and to raise awareness on the importance of learning to code in 21st century to shape a brighter future. The idea was to show that it is not just about the geek in the basement or the super-tech-savvy person but that it actually plays a role in everything we do and everybody should have access to it, and learn how to code.

At GIS, we try to provide students with such opportunities to enhance their technological knowledge as these technological advantages students get through such programmes would foster their learning and encourage them to build the habit of independent learning as well.
