GIS students for volunteer work

GIS kick-started its Community Service Programme for the year today, 11th February 2018 , in a special assembly held in the school hall. “GIS for the Community” is a whole school programme run in the school which focuses on service to the community.
The rationale behind the programme is to instill a love of service to others in the students and teachers. Activities like beach clean ups, donating to those in need and plastic collection were held previously. Last year the school donated , in kind , to the home for people with special needs through the funds collected by the teachers in a fundraising programme. Under the plastic collection programme, so far, nearly 3 tonnes of household plastic has been collected and sent to Parley for recycling.
This year we began the school with a revision in the guideline of the Community Service programme by including an award for volunteerism. The students who complete a given number of hours of volunteer work will be recognized and awarded in the school Achievement Ceremony from 2019 onward. The opportunity is open for all students of grade 1 to 10 and the number of hours vary from grade to grade.
In today’s assembly, approximately 650 books were donated to AA.Thoddo School, and it was received by the Principal of the school, Mr. Moosa Solih. The books were collected in a book drive held last year for this purpose.
Officials from ARC, Care Society, Parley Maldives, Environmental Protection Agency, Maldives Red Crescent, The Founder of Beautiful Eyes Down Syndrome Association, Mr. Ahmed Ansam and also National Award Winner for work with disabled people, Mr. Ahmed Hishan participated in the assembly and talked to the students about the work they do and how students can volunteer and give to the community.
Different activities will be carried out this year under this programme and GIS believes the volunteering initiative will be a fruitful one. At the end of the day, Grade 10 students set up information desks in the hall to give information to students and parents on the revised guideline for community work.
