WSC, 2019 – GLOBAL ROUND BEIJING, CHINA
This year’s Global round in Beijing was the largest and the most diverse in the program’s history, with over 3250 students. The event was held at the China National Convention Center (CNCC) from 20th – 26th June.
GIS was represented by 8 teams, and they brought home 70 gold, 85 silver medals and 2 trophies. One team from the junior division (Mish’aal Ismail Mahmood, Inaan Fathih Shakir and Maryam Sarah Nazil) is selected as 10th from South Asia and one team from the Senior Division (Sulaf Moosa Latheef, Shaina Mohammed Shainee and Aminath Azka Abdulla) holds the 3rd place in South Asia. In addition to this, Yoosuf Shariq Shahid secures 14th position in Scholar’s Challenge and the school top scholars are: Nabeeh Shameem - Junior division and Sulaf Moosa Latheef – Senior division.
During the 7 days the teams spent in Beijing, besides taking part and practicing for the competition, they also indulged themselves in several non-academic activities as well. One such activity was the scavenger hunt which took place in Beijing, Shijingshan Amusement park. Students from different countries were brought together and assigned different tasks such as reenacting a flash mob, or interviewing people from different teams. The students made many friends from all over the world during the few hours they spent together on the hunt.
The theme for the year, A World on the Margins was discussed and debated upon by the students in their team tasks such as the debate, collaborative writing and scholars’ challenge. They dived deep into the misunderstood parts of the world and worked hard to present ideas and suggestions to make these margins disappear.
The team consisting of 24 students were accompanied by the Deputy Principal Ms. Shirmeena Faheem, their coach HOD English Saroj Wilson, Ms.Aminath Zeeshan Amir and four parents. Special thanks to the parents for all their assistance throughout the trip. The team is looking forward to its final round – the Tournament of Champions to be held this autumn, 2019 at Yale University, New Haven, USA.
After a week of challenges and tasks the team was warmly welcomed by the parents and the Senior management of GIS.
