The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week (WSW) will be held each year from 4th to 10th October. For the first time in Maldives, GIS launched the Space Science Education in collaboration with Institute of Global Success (IGS) on 6th February 2020 and since then we have held few activities. Similarly, marking “World Space Week 2020”, was another activity under this programme and so GIS conducted a virtual “Space Week 2020”, under this year’s theme “Satellite Improve Life”. At the inaugural function held on 04th October 2020 at 1600 hrs. the school Principal, Mr. Ali Mustafa addressed the students. This was followed by an introductory speech given by the GIS Science Club Leader Mohamed Shamhan Shahum. Based on the theme “Satellite Improve Life” a 15 min. video was presented to show the importance of satellite in the present 21st Century human life. Over 350 participants were present in the live event conducted through Microsoft Teams. Different activities were assigned to different grades and conducted on 6th & 7th October 2020. These were assessed virtually and to encourage students badges at different levels were given to students. On the 8th October 2020, students were given the chance to participate in the ‘STEMfest’ which was a held as a virtual Space event that combined classroom and hands on learning in an exciting, fun-packed talks showcasing the many wonders of space.
GIS would like to extend gratitude to the CEO of Institute for Global Success, Mr. Rifath Mohamed for giving our students this opportunity.
