commonwealthday2015As the second Monday of March is marked as Commonwealth Day, GIS has celebrated this day with various activities arranged for Grades 1 – 10.  Students were given opportunity to wear the National dress that represents the countries in Commonwealth.

The day began with a special assembly during which the President of English Literary Association (SLATE), Fathimath Fanan Nizam of Grade 8B spoke about the importance of marking the day and at the same time highlighted the Commonwealth’s theme for this year which is ‘Young Commonwealth’ along with the objectives. Fanan also quoted from the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr. Kamalesh Sharma’s speech that “A Young Commonwealth recognises the capacity, contribution and potential of young people, who play a vital role at the heart of sustainable development and democracy" while speaking at the assembly.
For students to understand the importance of this day, activities such as preparing headbands and flags with important information of the countries were made by students. On this occasion, GIS aims to participate in the Commonwealth essay writing competition held by the ‘The Royal Commonwealth Society’ this year as well.

With the same spirit, GIS try to organise events in the hope of producing young people with innovative minds who can bring fresh perspectives and new ideas to the nation for a better sustainable development.
