Celebrating World Autism Day
World Autism Day is marked on the second of April every year. Spreading awareness on Autism is important for everyone in the school as we believe that students with Autism should be given equal opportunities as students in the mainstream classes. At GIS students with Autism study along with mainstream students.
To celebrate the day, the Student Support Department organised some activities which were held on Thursday, 2nd April 2015. The school building was also lit with blue lights respecting the autism awareness the previous night. On Thursday morning GIS staff attended school wearing shades of blue. The staff were given blue ribbons as and when they arrived school which they wore throughout the day.
At the school general assembly a speech was given by Grade 5 student Mohamed Iyan Nizam on the topic the ‘Special qualities of children with Autism’. Blue ribbons were distributed to the students of Grades 6 to 10 who wore them throughout the school session. Students of Grades 1 – 3 did an activity where they coloured puzzle pieces and wrote messages related to Autism.
Celebrating such days gives the students of GIS the chance to accept differences and be sensitive to special education needs. At GIS, we believe that accepting differences and helping students with Special Needs are challenges to strengthen mainstreaming.
