12 students of GIS left to Srilanka today to participate in the regional round of the World Scholar’s Cup to be held in British School Colombo. The students were accompanied by the English Head of Department and the Deputy Principal for the Senior school.  This is the first time GIS is taking part in an International academic competition.
The World Scholar's Cup, abbreviated as WSC  is an international team academic tournament consisting of four events: Team debate, Scholar’s Bowl, Collaborative Writing and Scholar’s Bowl. The events are held in different regions of the world  and the winners meet and compete at the Global Round.
This year,  British School Colombo is hosting a regional round and GIS was invited to take part in this exciting event. Earlier, in 2015, the English HOD attended a trainer’s workshop held in the British School as part of the preparation for this tournament. She has been training the students for this event for the past one and a half months.
Before the students departed, Principal Mr. Thoha Saleem met the students. He talked about the importance of learning to respect other’s space, ideas and opinions, getting along with others and always to find a win-win solution to problems. He advised the students to have an abundance mentality which will reap great rewards like good friendship and love and respect from others.  While encouraging the students to work towards winning the competition, , he stressed that winning a title is good, but to have done their best and learnt a lot in the process should be more rewarding.
During their visit, the students are expected to meet the High Commissioner of the Maldives in Colombo, Madam Zahiya Zareer. The students will be returning on the 14th of March.
