WSC, 2018 – GLOBAL ROUND MALAYSIA

{flike}

The World Scholar’s Cup was an eye-opening journey for the Junior Scholars of GIS. This year’s Global round in Kuala Lumpur was the largest and the most diverse in the program’s history, with over 5,000 students from 50 different countries joining hands under one roof at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.

The 5 teams brought home 46 gold, 50 silver medals and 4 trophies. One team in particular (Ali Rashwan, Sulaf Moosa and  Shaina Mohammed) won 19th place in the Scholar’s bowl and 4th place from South Asia.  Shaina Mohammed Shainee from the same team also won 16th place in junior division debate.

During the 7 days the teams spent in Kuala Lampur, they did not only spend their time studying and practicing for the competition, they indulged themselves in several non-academic activities as well. One such activity was the scavenger hunt which took place in KL’s Sunway lagoon. Students from different countries were brought together and assigned different tasks such as reenacting a flash mob, or interviewing people from different teams. The students made many friends from all over the world during the few hours they spent together on the hunt.  Marsh Mohammed Naseem, also took part in the Scholar’s Show, where she performed ‘All of Me’ by John Legend.

The scholar’s Challenge and collaborative writing got the students to ponder on current issues the world is entangled in while the debate motions enabled them to voice out and express their concerns on urgent matters. The Cultural fair gave them a mini-tour around the world.

The team consisting of 15 students were accompanied by the Deputy Principal Ms. Ahmeema Abdulghafoor and their Coach, HOD English Saroj Wilson and two parents. Special thanks to the parents for all their assistance throughout the trip. The WSC team is looking forward to its final round – the Tournament of Champions to be held this autumn, 2018 at Yale University, New Haven, USA.
