Ramadan brings together people and build family traditions. Maldivians have been upholding the traditional values of imparting Islamic morals and sharing food by inviting family, neighbours and friends to their homes whenever possible because Ramadan holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims, as it celebrates the spirit of solidarity, strengthens family ties and friendship, and instills the importance of the virtues of sacrifice, charity, tolerance and patience. Such values are strengthened by the spirit of ‘togetherness’ among people living in the country.

The trend of holding ‘Taraweeh Feast’ has been going on for generations but with time changes keep on adding to the style and manner of holding the feast. Many families are united during such feasts and many people strengthen their relationship of friendship and Islamic brother and sisterhood.

With the same spirit, GIS held staff taraweeh on 14th July 2015 with a special touch. School management along with the Islam Department organised three different competitions during this special event: a Special Feast as one, Group Madhaha as a second one and Individual Quran Recitation as the third competition. For the feast, unique delicacies were prepared by the staff and brought to school which were displayed in the school hall before everybody helped themselves. The food displayed were judged by professional chefs from Citron by Lemon Grass upon school’s request and winners of the feast were awarded with special trophies. It was an amazing sight to see the joy among the staff who won first, second and third places. After the taraweeh feast, Madhaha and Quran competitions were held. Staff showed spirit of participation and enjoyed the time.

GIS encourages the work of the staff in every such event and would like to thank the staff for maintaining the individual role in order to keep order and friendliness within the school community.
