Year 5’s visit to the garbage dump area - Kuni Koshi No. 2

Our Year 5 students are learning about ‘Waste’ and ‘Managing Waste’ these days and to make their learning interesting we always seek every possible opportunity. Under this aim, today our Year 5 students went to the garbage dump area - Kuni Koshi No. 2 to observe how the waste is managed under various categories. The management of waste under categories was organised and handled by Male’ City Council. The dump area was opened to the public and school students to make us aware of the importance of managing waste.

We believe that making the use of such opportunities widen our awareness on pressing issues such as waste management in Male’. Through this visit our students were able to accept how much waste is being collected within one day’s time and the negative impact on our environment. At the same time, the categorisation of the waste has taught our students the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

Hence, we have planned activities to come up with waste reduction solutions which we also plan to share with responsible authorities in the days ahead.

Geography students began online classes

Grade 10 Geography students began online classes on the 3rd of June, 2014 in order to prepare well for the upcoming  O’ level exam . The students will be attending the lectures via the online platform, Udemy and they will listen to lectures, interact with the lecturer, do individual and group work, quizzes and view related videos and other links related to the topics.

The exercise is to help students to widen their knowledge and improve their e-learning skills to prepare them for learning beyond school.

The lectures will be delivered  by an experienced  Maldivian lecturer Ms. Raniya Ahmed  Mansoor who is presently working in Singapore.

GIS Fruit & Veg Program - Glow & Grow with Fruits & Veggies

On 19th May 2014, GIS kicked off the fruit & veg program ‘Glow & Grow with Fruits & Veggies’ with all the staff of the school wearing a fruit or a vegetable dress or a prop in order to receive the students early in the morning. This was an attractive event which was acknowledged by all students and parents of the school. All students loved the kick-off activity and hence most promised to use fruits and veggies in their diets then and there.

All students were also attracted by the fruit & veg parade performed by the students of the school environment club ‘Fashala’ along with the school band. Under this program there are various activities which would encourage GIS students to inculcate the habit of eating fruits and vegs as part of their diets. These activities will be stretched across the year and conducted with the help of the students of ‘Fashala’ club.

The next activity under this program will be organised and conducted before the first term ends. GIS wish all students and staff would become examples of fruit & veg eaters.
